How to Trade Compute Futures

Compute futures trade on regulated derivatives exchanges through the same infrastructure as any other commodity futures contract. This guide covers who can trade, how to get market access, the difference between hedging and speculation, and the key risks to understand before entering the market.

Who Can Trade Compute Futures

CME compute futures are available to institutional participants with futures trading accounts through registered Futures Commission Merchants (FCMs). The market is designed for:

Retail investors cannot directly trade CME futures without a futures account. Indirect access may come through compute-focused ETFs or structured products over time.

Step 1: Open a Futures Trading Account

To trade CME compute futures, you need a futures account with a registered FCM that provides NYMEX access. Most major prime brokers and futures-focused brokers offer this. The account opening process typically requires:

  • Legal entity registration (individual or institution)
  • CFTC required disclosures and risk acknowledgment
  • AML/KYC documentation

Step 3: Choose Between Hedging and Speculation

A hedge is a position that offsets an existing economic exposure. If you expect to spend $10 million on H100 compute over the next three months, you can buy H100 futures equivalent to that exposure today. If H100 rental prices rise, the futures gain offsets the higher actual cost. If prices fall, the futures loss is offset by lower actual compute bills.

Key considerations for hedgers: the settlement index may not perfectly match your actual provider pricing. This creates basis risk. If you buy exclusively from a single provider at a negotiated rate that diverges from the composite index, your hedge is imperfect. Hedging effectiveness depends on the correlation between your actual cost and the settlement index.

For Speculation (Funds and Traders)

Speculative positions take directional views on GPU rental prices without an underlying compute budget to offset. A fund that believes H100 prices will fall faster than the forward curve implies can sell H100 futures. A fund that believes B200 supply will be constrained longer than expected can buy B200 futures.

Speculative positions carry full price risk. The forward curve already reflects market consensus expectations about price direction. Profitable speculation requires a view that differs from and proves more accurate than that consensus.

ICE Compute Futures: A Second Access Point

ICE and Ornn have announced competing compute futures contracts that will trade through ICE infrastructure, with index data on Bloomberg Terminal. Access to ICE compute futures requires an ICE trading account through a registered clearing member.

ICE contracts cover H100, H200, B200, B300, and RTX 5090, settling against the Ornn Compute Price Index (OCPI). Participants with existing ICE energy trading relationships may find it easier to access ICE compute products through their current broker.

Key Risks to Understand

  • Basis risk. Your actual compute costs may differ from the settlement index. Spot contracts with individual providers at negotiated rates will not perfectly track a composite index.
  • Liquidity risk. Compute futures are a new market. Initial trading volumes may be thin, creating wide bid-ask spreads and difficulty exiting positions at expected prices.
  • Settlement index accuracy. If the settlement index does not accurately represent actual market prices, contract settlement will diverge from economic reality. Index methodology disputes in commodity markets are common in early years.
  • Regulatory risk. The CME/Silicon Data contracts are pending CFTC regulatory review as of August 2026. If review delays the launch or changes contract terms, traders with pre-positioned strategies face adjustment costs.
  • Technology obsolescence risk. GPU generations change. H100 futures may lose relevance faster than a multi-year oil contract if B200 fully displaces H100 before contract expiration.
